Recently, I walked down the alley to see the next big tech expo happening in my city. When I entered the venue, many companies were introducing sophisticated gadgets empowered by voice command. Most of these devices Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and other interactive voice interfaces. It seems as voice command will eliminate the use of keypads very soon, but what does this mean to IoT product designers?

Here is the most important thing to remember while designing an IoT product – “everything should connect to everything, and everything must work with everything”. As simple as it may seem, designing a functional IoT device is not everyone’s cup of tea. Designers must have a holistic view before approaching anything. The algorithm of IoT devices are ever-changing, and adding a voice control to the sprawling IoT mix might make things complicated than ever.

To design Alexa-integrated products users can use SDK platform. On the other side, Google Home and Microsoft Corona also have their own integration tools. Besides that, we can notice Apple’s Siri on iPhones worldwide.

So, which of the voice assistant would you like to integrate into your system? Even if you select Amazon Alexa today, its versatility can be overlapped by competitors within a short span of time. And, everything you know today might change while your product hits the market. And it’s impossible to determine the proficiency of each assistant. In the Q1 of 2017, Alexa alone learned 7000 additional voice commands making it the most loved voice assistant.

But if you want to integrate voice command in your product, it is essential to determine its functionality. Instead of writing custom code to define the connectivity between your IoT product and a specific voice-control system, I recommend that you build your connected product using a comprehensive IoT platform.

By doing so, you’ll enable your product to connect directly with IoT cloud platforms. This, in turn, will help you to connect with a plethora of voice control system. Besides that, selecting the right IoT platform will also improve flexibility and allow you to connect with different IoT apps, devices, and services without writing custom codes for each connection.
