How Internet of things (IoT) Came into Existence in IoT world?

Today, the Internet of Things is the biggest buzz in the world of technology. But, have we ever imagined how this technology came into existence? In this article, we will talk about the history of the Internet of Things.

The term Internet of Things was first perceived in the early 2000’s. It all started with the invention of the smartphones, and today we have a plethora of devices powered by the Internet of Things or connected technology. The technology has also made its strong presence in different industries including manufacturing, automotive, healthcare, logistics, and retail.

However, the Internet of Things is an advanced form of a traditional technology commonly known to us as machine-to-machine or M2M technology. The exponential growth of M2M technology enabled science geeks to revamp the technology, and convert it into a much bigger platform.

Telemetry and Invention of M2M

Telemetry was first used by the Russian Army in the year 1845. The technology was used in First World War to transmit data from one device to other. This was the simplest form of wired communication. The technology was later capitalized to invent two-way radio communication. After the invention of the two-way radio, a plethora of communicating devices including aerospace telemetry, weather balloons, and telephone lines.

M2M systems

The M2M technology was revealed with the introduction of GSM connectivity by Siemens in 1995. Until 1997, the wireless connectivity was available in full scale and numerous applications were introduced that used this technology including telemedicine and vending machines. Machine-to-machine solutions then made a robust presence across multiple introduce including manufacturing, healthcare, transportation, and more. Evolution of M2M technology saw significant growth until 2010, then the IoT was introduced to the world.

Internet of Things (2010 to present)

The recent innovation in the tech world has helped M2M a brand new recognition – The Internet of Things (IoT).Today, the IoT reigns different industries, and businesses are capitalizing its features to explore new possibilities. In 2012, cloud computing was adopted by a majority of businesses, which has empowered today’s advanced solutions. In 2013 and 2014, an assortment of connected devices that operated with chips and sensors were introduced. In recent years IoT has offered new innovations like connected cars, smart homes and cities, automated lights, and other sensor-based IoT devices.  Now IT giants such as Apple, Google, and Microsoft are showing a keen attention to the IoT. It’s easy to assume that the future of IoT looks very bright.

The IoT system will soon cover 40% of the total generated data until 2020. And, the global amount of IoT devices will amount to $50 billion, which is a massive achievement for the technical world.
