Wi-Fi technology has dominated IoT from the day of its inception, now there is a new competitor in the block, and it’s going to make a stout presence in the market soon.

A Bluetooth SIG spokesperson revealed that they would soon introduce Bluetooth 5. This is great news! Bluetooth 5 will unveil new technical possibilities, and massive innovation can happen in different industries. While there are lots of things to enjoy with Bluetooth 5, tech enthusiasts are excited about Bluetooth Mesh.

Bluetooth Mesh changes the connectivity of Bluetooth from point-to-point to a real mesh networking topology. This allows users to cross the threshold of a typical Bluetooth network area and amplify the reach of their device. The technology doesn’t require a hub like a router to connect different devices. For instance, you can connect the smart lights inside your home to your Bluetooth device i.e. smartphone or tablet, and adjust them accordingly. Even if your internet server goes down, it won’t affect your Bluetooth mesh network.

Similar to WiFi mesh networks, Bluetooth Mesh can extend coverage using different Bluetooth connected devices. For example, you want to pass data to a device in your garage, but your Bluetooth range is limited. At this point, you can use Bluetooth Mesh technology to connect with the device. Your hub may not directly reach your garage, but you can pass the data to your TV, which will pass it to the toaster in the kitchen, and then it later reaches the final destination.

Compared to WiFi Mesh, the Bluetooth Mesh requires less power. Devices integrated with Bluetooth 4.0 or above will support Bluetooth Mesh, but the device manufacturers have to release an update for their customers.

According to Bob Morris, vice president of Wireless Business Unit – “The addition of mesh to the Bluetooth standard will open up significant opportunities for richer experiences in smart homes and building automation, enabling fresh waves of innovation across a range of IoT applications.”

The Bluetooth SIG experts assume that Bluetooth Mesh will roll out very soon since there is no need to design new hardware to support the technology. Bluetooth Mesh will be available in the market within the next six months. Many companies are even designing various devices that will support this technology.
