The Internet of Things is not just a buzzword on the internet; it has made its presence and will be around for a while. Like every other industry, the agriculture industry is also encircled by the spectrum of the IoT. A recent study conducted by Inmarsat – Global Mobile Satellite Company concluded that agriculture industry is keen to implement IoT technology and spend the next five harvesting the fruits of the technology.

The study by Inmarsat was titled ‘The Future of IoT in Enterprise – 2017’. The study included responses from the spokesperson of different agriculture-based companies. Most stated that the use of IoT in agriculture can bring massive benefits to both manufacturers and end-users. More than 73% of the listed firms have already adopting IoT-based solutions. And the surprising point is it has already overweighed other industries including transportation, energy, and mining. The research even states that the implementation of IoT technology in agritech industry will increase by 47% in the next two years.

As stated by Ayan Jobse-Alkemade, director of agriculture sector development at Inmarsat Enterprise said: “With the planet estimated to reach a population of 10 billion people by 2050, humanity will face challenges with sustainable water sources, food production, and the best use of land to get the maximum yield from crops. Additionally, using the most efficient method to deliver the resources will increasingly feature on the global agenda. In short, farmers, with the help of the agritech sector, need to get smarter, leaner and faster from the field to fork.”

Today, there is an abundance of IoT-based agriculture devices in the market. Automated tractors, soil monitoring sensors, and weather forecaster are just a few of the examples. Within the next ten years, there will be an abundance of automated farming devices in the market that will make farming easier than ever before. Today most farmers, throughout the globe, are switching to the IoT-based device to enhance their productivity.

A part of the research also looked into the mining industry and found out that IoT is helping mining companies to meet their obligation to their employees, environment, shareholders, and government. Though the stakes in mining are, agriculture has easily surpassed the IoT-Technology investment.
